September 4, 2010. Watched DVD: Jane Austen in Manhattan (James Ivory, 1980). Of course, I'll read most books with the words "Jane Austen" on the cover and watch most movies with the words "Jane Austen" on the poster. Besides, I'm a James Ivory fan. I never tire of films like A Room with a View (1985), Maurice (1987), Howards End (1992), The Remains of the Day (1993), independently from my admiration for the novels (Ruth Prawer Jhabvala turns out tremendous adaptations, obviously). Isn't it funny though how they never age, whereas Jane Austen in Manhattan has aged so badly it's quite unspeakable, rather painful to watch -- and not just because of Robert Powell's hairdo. I'd missed it back then, and now wonder what I would have made of it in 1980.
