1999 to 2003 Raja Kumaradu was Mahesh’s debut and starred him opposite Preity Zinta. His role as Raja won him the Nandi Best Male Debut. In 2000, he starred in Yuvaraju and Vamsi, in which he shared screen space with Namrata Shirodkar and his father Krishna. Murari in 2001 with Sonali Bendre won him the Nandi Award for Special Jury. He won the award again in 2002 for Takkari Donga with Lisa Ray and Bipasha Basu. Year 2003 was another year for award winning performances with Nandi Award for Best Actor for Nijam and Filmfare Best Telugu Actor Award for Okkadu with Bhoomika Chawla.
2004 to 2009 Another Nandi Award for Special Jury went his way for his role in Arjun. The other release in 2004 was Naani. Athadu in 2005 was a money spinner and won him another Nandi Best Actor Award. The 2006 release Pokiri, made around the realty mafia, won him the Filmfare Best Telugu Actor Award for his portrayal of Pandu, a thug. Athidi with Amrita Rao released in 2007 was directed by his brother Ramesh Babu. There were no releases in 2008. However his fans can look forward to Varudu which has him playing a taxi driver opposite Parvati Melton.

1999-2004
Mahesh Babu debuted in 1999 with the K. Raghavendra Rao film Raja Kumarudu for which he earned the Nandi Award for Best Male Debut.
In 2000, Mahesh Babu appeared in Y.V.S Chowdary's Yuvaraju, and in Vamsi.
In 2001, he starred with Sonali Bendre in Krishna Vamsi's Murari. His performance earned him the Nandi Special Jury Award. His next movie Takkari Donga and earned him the Nandi Special Jury Award.
Later that year, he starred with Arthi Agarwal in Bobby, directed by Sobhan.
His next film Okkadu (2003) opposite Bhoomika Chawla, produced by M.S. Raju and directed by Gunasekhar was critically acclaimed and a biggest box-office success of that year whilst earning his first Filmfare Best Actor Award (Telugu).In the same year, he appeared in Teja's film Nijam.In 2004, he paired up with Amisha Patel in S. J. Suryaah's Naani. This was the Telugu version of the Tamil film, New. Later that year, he again appeared in Gunasekhar movie Arjun.
His 2005 film with Trisha Krishnan, titled Athadu directed by Trivikram Srinivas was declared sensational hit in India as well as in USA and became one of the highest grossers of the year in Tollywood[disambiguation needed] and his performance earned him second Nandi Award for Best Actor.He next appeared ] in the action film Pokiri directed and produced by Puri Jagannadh which grossed Indian Rupee symbol.svg 69.5 Crores. The film completed 100 days in as many as 200 centres in the Andhra pradesh and neighbouring States, including 17 centers in Hyderabad alone and silver jubilee in a record 63 centres.In the same year, he starred in Gunasekhar's film Sainikudu.
In October 2007, he appeared in Surender Reddy's Athidhi with Bollywood actress Amrita Rao which was a commercial hit.The film opened with a gross collection of Indian Rupee symbol.svg 12.5 crores in the first week of its release.
He next signed a film with Trivikram Srinivas titled Khaleja. Mahesh Babu had planned to take a gap of six months after Athidhi. Due to unexpected circumstances, the film was postponed several times and took two years to be completed. Khaleja was released on 7 October 2010.The film received mixed reviews.
His film Dookudu by Sreenu Vaitla's is scheduled to release in August 2011.
